Suzanne Caraman for Select Board

Suzanne Caraman

Pownal, Vermont

February 15, 2018

My name is Suzanne Caraman and I’m running for the three-year term as a Pownal Select Board member on the March 6, 2018 ballot.

I am a current member of the select board having been elected to fill the remainder of a select board member’s term after his resignation. My fellow select board members have appointed me clerk of the select board for both 2016 and 2017.

During my short tenure on the board I have played an instrumental role in getting the Town of Pownal website up and running. Prior to this recent successful effort there had been several years of frustration in this endeavor.

I have taken the lead on doing the research and accomplishing the tasks necessary to have the town fill the position of town administrator, a position which I feel is urgently needed to help the select board deal with its day-to-day administrative issues while permitting them to focus on larger, more long-term issues. This position is not intended to displace anyone, but to help with all aspects of running a municipality.  I’ve been working closely with the Vermont League of Cities and Towns to develop a job description and hope to realize the appointment of a town administrator during my next term in office.

In addition, I am working hard on developing a new personnel policy manual for town employees to permit all parties to know and understand the relevant rules, regulations and benefits.

My view of town government is that all elected and appointed officials should be aware of town policies and procedures and follow them in an open and transparent way.

During my next term it is my goal to assist in procuring additional grant monies.

I was born in North Adams but raised in Pownal.  My father was Arthur E. George, a former select board member and the town constable for many years. He was a member of the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department for 35 years. I am a prior delinquent tax collector for the town, having served from 1999 to 2011. I’ve been employed as an administrative assistant at Bennington College for the past 26 years.

My partner, Alan Strobridge was a member of the select board from 1999 to 2002 when he died of cancer. Alan was instrumental in securing the tannery lands for the town and Strobridge Recreational Park, off Dean Road is named in his honor. My children went to Pownal schools.

I respectfully ask for your vote on March 6 as I very much want to continue working for the progress and enhancement of the Town of Pownal, a community to which I and members of my family have devoted a substantial part of our lives.

Thank you,

Suzanne Caraman
